“Homage to ‘Descent from the Cross'” (Weyden)
This was the inside of an altarpiece the church used in 2018 for Good Friday worship. It is very loosely based on Weyden’s “The Descent from the Cross” (c. 1435), which was an altarpiece that is now in the Museo de Prado in Madrid. The loose lines of the unfinished figures is somewhat in the style of Matisse. It is purposely unfinished: not just because it would be a monumental task to complete this, but because of the imagery of being “incomplete.” We are never finished, our life in faith is incomplete, and our understanding of the mystery of the cross is sketchy at best.
